about bones in

Quarterly of Young Musicologists of the Jagiellonian University (2/2020)

Bones are one of the simplest and oldest instruments, the origin of which dates back to prehistoric times, and in Poland it is a very niche instrument. Bones – better known under the English name rhythm bones – are widespread today mainly in America and Ireland. This instrument was popular in the era of large sailing ships. Sailors were not educated and had no money for expensive instruments that could easily be damaged during sea voyages. However, the sea people loved to make music. Therefore, the bones, which were originally made of seal and whale bones, and later also of wood, fulfilled their role perfectly. The simple playing technique – which can be mastered during one cruise – also contributed to the popularity of this instrument.
